New Delhi visit: NGO advises PM not to ink treaties

Water and Energy Users' Federation (WAFED) has asked Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' not to sign any treaty or agreement on sharing of water resources with India. The PM is leaving for India tomorrow. At a meeting with a WAFED delegation, the PM said mistakes committed in the past will not be repeated. He pledged to work as per wishes of the Nepali people.

Ram Chandra Chataut, Ratan Bhandari and Khima Ram Lamsal of the WAFED also submitted a memorandum to the PM today. In the memorandum, they have appealed to the PM to work to scrap all discriminatory treaties and pacts signed with India.

The WAFED has asked the PM not to give a go-ahead to Saptakoshi High Dam and Pancheswar-Purnagiri High Dam projects. They also asked Prachanda to hold talks with India to compensate for the losses caused by flooding in the Koshi river.

The Mahakali treaty and Gandak agreement were not beneficial for Nepal, it stated, adding that the state should hold consultations with Nepali experts and people before signing before signing agreements. It asked the government to hold talks with India on withdrawal of Indian security personnel from Kalapani and demand dismantling of infrastructure built against the international law on border.
